Formando Mumia began training capoeira as a teenager in 1987 in Rio de Janeiro. In 2007, he received his brown cord (Contra-Mestre/Formando level) from Mestre Boneco. He has been teaching for almost 15 years; he has been teaching at our current location in Long Beach, CA since 2005. In addition to teaching in Long Beach, Mumia has taught extensively in Rio de Janeiro and at several locations in Southern California. He has been a guest instructor at locations throughout the United States and throughout the world.

In addition to playing capoeira, Mumia has also worked as an acrobat, touring with Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus. In the circus, he performed stunts including the Russian Bar, Aerial Cradle, and Globe of Death. Mumia has competed in and won several fitness and dance competitions. He also performed consulting work on the set of Meet the Fockers.

As a teacher of capoeira, Mumia embraces the belief that capoeira is not only a disciplined martial art, but also a unique and expressive art form that must be played from the heart.
